American singer Madonna wrote on Twitter an appeal to Pope Francis to be able to meet him and discuss his excommunication by the Catholic Church. Madonna says she’s a ‘good Catholic’, although she admits she hasn’t professed in a few decades (in the tweet, she also uses a pun with the English term I swear, which means “I swear” and “I swear”). She says that she was excommunicated three times, without specifying the reasons, and that she does not believe it is true.
“Could it be possible that we meet one day to discuss some important things? Kansia has been excommunicated 3 times. It doesn’t seem right.”
Welcome Tweet embed Francis – I’m a good Catholic. I swear! I mean I don’t swear! A few decades have passed since my last confession. Can we meet someday to discuss some important matters?
I have been contacted 3 times. That doesn’t seem fair. Sincerely, Madonna– Madonna (@Madonna) May 5 2022
This isn’t the first time Madonna has said she has been excommunicated by the Catholic Church: She’s said this many times in the past, most recently during a 2016 interview with British host James Corden. However, he never explained in detail what happened, and there was no public statement on this matter from the Catholic Church.
However, in the past, Madonna was often criticized by the Church itself, especially at the height of her career between the 1980s and 1990s, for certain positions considered blasphemous. Among them was the famous video of like prayerfrom 1989, where you can see burning crosses, the singer’s hands with stigmas and other items taken from Christian icons.
