Shortage due to Abbott factory closures
The shortage of infant formula in the United States was caused by the February closure of the Michigan facility operated by Abbott Laboratories over contamination concerns.
The structure that represents approx 40% of infant formula in the US marketwithdrew some of its products and closed a manufacturing plant after four infants who were fed formula prepared at the facility fell ill with a rare disease, a bacterial infection.
Two of them died later. US President Joe Biden admitted this week that he underestimated the plant’s supply. He said his administration started after he learned of the situation in early April and was moving to resolve the crisis.
Imported milk powder from Germany
Washington sent military cargo planes to bring infant formula from Germany. The US is also trying to secure more supplies from the UK and Australia as part of the so-called process fly formula.
Belarus as a state and President Lukashenko personally has been the target of multiple rounds of Western sanctions, yet today Belarus offers to send powdered milk to the United States.
