“The shooting was a mess, EL James wanted to control everything” – Corriere.it

From Simona Marchetti

In a lengthy interview with “Vanity Fair”, the 32-year-old actress returned to talk about the trilogy, in which she played Anastasia “Anna” Steele, describing the experience on set as “psychotic”, also due to the constant interference of the “author of the books”.

A “psychotic” experience and without the sexual acuity I thought there would be, but seven years after the first movie, Dakota Johnson hasn’t regretted agreeing to star in Anastasia “Ana” Steele in Fifty Shades of Gray. And in the next two sequels (Fifty Shades Darker of 2017 and Fifty Shades of Red of 2018). “I don’t think it’s a matter of regret – explained the 32-year-old actress in a lengthy interview with Vanity Fair. If I knew at the time what it would be like, I don’t think I would have accepted. I would have said to myself ‘This is a psychotic experience.'” I signed up. To produce a different version of the movie which we then ended up making, but anyway no, I don’t regret it.”

The author of the books, E.L. James, also contributed to the complexity of life on the filming set, whose constant overlapping made the film’s handling messy to say the least. “James had a lot of creative control, he was with us all day, every day – continued Johnson – and he just expected certain things to happen. There were parts of the books that didn’t work in a movie, like some of the inner monologues, which were really bad. They didn’t work if you read them. Loudly. It was always a fight. All the time.”

Disagreements were common, and working in these conditions is now a problem for everyone. “It was a crazy thing,” said the actress, who has been linked to Coldplay singer Chris Martin since 2017. “I’ve never been able to honestly talk about it, because you want to promote a movie the right way and in the end I’m still proud of what we did and that everything went the way it was supposed to. It happens, but it was complicated. We filmed following James’ instructions and then shot the movie we wanted to do. The night before I was rewriting scenes with old dialogue, so I could add a line here and there. It was a mess.”
